cellini's Diaryland Diary

Simon Winchester didn't do the bare minimum.

Ok, this lazy fucking idiot, Simon Winchester, wrote on page 45, when speaking of Lewis and Clark's journals, regarding a mention of "I picked up a pair of shows made by the Sioux Ind to the westward:"

"Scholars who study such matters claim that Clark employed no fewer than twenty-six other spellings of the tribe's name."

Why, Simon Lazy Winchester, are you merely quoting nobody in particular in this shitty footnote? You fucking craphound. Why do you not personally actually know exactly how many spellings of the the tribe's name were used in Clark's writings? IT WAS YOUR FUCKING JOB TO READ CLARK'S ORIGINAL WORK. Just read it and count them yourself, you half-assed piece of shit.

I can hardly believe that this lazy work of total shit was published. Let alone that it was a best-seller, and that it went to paperback.

Why did I put Winchester on a pedestal as a goal to write towards? I cannot imagine that any actual historian would endorse this volume of worthless, lazy shit in which he couldn't even bother to actually read Clark in total before sending this shit on to an editor who clearly only acted as a book producer and did not vet anything in this shambles of a book.

I hypothesize that only about 10% of the people who bought this book actually read it. Most of them bought it to feel like they have bought into an important book. They bought it to say that they have bought it, and to put it on their shelf where others may see it and they may bask in "I probably read this" ness.

Did it really only take Krakatoa to get to this point? Where Winchester can hammer out 80,000 words of bullshit and call it a book without anyone calling him out on it? So far, this is a really bad book and I don't understand how he got away with it.

I hope that my standard never falls so low. He didn't do the reading, he includes no footnotes, he does less than the bare minimum. How can you think so little of what the academic historical community has to say about your book? Simon Winchester is a poor excuse for a historian.

Next comes Kurlanski. Where does he really stand?
