cellini's Diaryland Diary

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This feels like a lousy deal.

I don't think that this building is worth $2M. I suspect that it is worth $700 - $1.2M.

Tomorrow I have to buy and price incoming books with Sandy. These are literally numbers and decisions that come out of the mouth of a man with dementia. He has no idea what books are selling, what we currently have in stock. He just looks at books with me, I describe what they are and in what condition, and he spits out a number from his wheelchair.

It is fucking absurd. That we go through this idiotic pantomime and then real work results from it. We have to make space for incoming books, culling what is already on the shelves, and then spend hours shelving this stuff. And what is coming in tomorrow is five boxes of fucking David Baldacchi and John Grisham and a bunch of far-right nutbag political books that will never sell in Charlottesville,

Sandy will want to buy all of them because they are in good condition. These are books bought by someone who never set foot in a bookstore. Books sold in grocery stores and in Target and in airports. The people who read this shit only set foot in a used bookstore when they have to get rid of a lot of books. They don't buy books in a used bookstore. So shit like this builds up. Grisham and Patterson and Clive Cussler and all of that shit that sells new in places that are not bookstores. There is no fucking point in trying to sell any of it. Those readers will never step into this bookstore.

But Sandy will want almost all of it. Meanwhile, I have two boxes of stuff that I picked up at thrift stores because it is stuff that we can sell quickly.
